Antelope vs Deer
Verdict: Look at what is on the head. Antelope carry permanent, unbranched horns, while deer grow bone antlers that are shed and regrown every year, usually on males only.
Antelope and deer are both hoofed, grazing or browsing animals, so people mix them up, and the North American pronghorn is often called an antelope even though it is neither. Antelope belong to the family Bovidae with cattle, sheep and goats. Deer belong to a separate family, Cervidae.
The headgear tells the story. A horn is a keratin sheath, like a fingernail, that grows from the base and stays for life. An antler is bone that grows from the tip and is shed and regrown each year. Antlers appear on males of most deer species, while horns usually appear on both sexes of antelope.

When you are looking at which
Antelope
- The animal has smooth, permanent horns that look the same all year and do not branch.
- Both the males and females carry head gear.
- It is a gazelle, eland, kudu or similar animal, usually described as an African plains species.
- A dropped, bone-like piece found on the ground would not be from an antelope, since horns stay attached.
Deer
- The head has bone antlers, and the animal is probably male.
- You find a dropped antler on the ground, since antlers are shed every year.
- The animal is a white-tailed deer, mule deer, elk, moose or caribou.
- It lives somewhere deer range, which is every continent except Australia and Antarctica.
How this works
The quiz covers five cues: headgear type, which sexes carry it, shedding, the animal's name and where it lives. Each answer scores for antelope or deer, and the side with more answers decides the result. You can answer from a photo, since horns and antlers usually show clearly in the picture.
The pronghorn complicates things because it sheds a horn sheath. Antelope is also a loose term for many bovids rather than a single family, so name and place are supporting cues, and headgear is the main one. Treat any single answer as a hint, and read the result as a best guess rather than a ruling.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- Scouting Montana: Conservation Corner, Antlers and Horns, Bone antlers versus keratin horns, shedding, sexes and pronghorn exception. (checked October 2026)
- Britannica: Antelope, Antelope are bovids with permanent, unbranched horns, over 90 species. (checked October 2026)
- Britannica: Deer, Deer family Cervidae, about 43 species, antlers on most males. (checked October 2026)
- San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance Library: Pronghorn taxonomy, Pronghorn family Antilocapridae and annual shedding of its horn sheath. (checked October 2026)
Field-identification guide. Antelope is a broad everyday term, and the pronghorn fits neither group.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between antlers and horns?
Antlers are bone that grow from the tip and are shed and regrown yearly. Horns are keratin, like fingernails, that grow from the base and stay for the animal's whole life.
Is a pronghorn an antelope or a deer?
Neither. The pronghorn is the only surviving species of the North American family Antilocapridae. Its horns have a bony core with a keratin sheath that it sheds and regrows every year.
Do female deer have antlers?
Usually not. Antlers appear on males of most deer species. The exception is reindeer, known in North America as caribou, in which both sexes grow them.
Are there antelope in North America?
Not true antelope. Antelope are mostly found in Africa, Europe and Asia. The animal called the American antelope is actually the pronghorn, which is in its own family.
