Wolf vs Coyote
Verdict: Size is the quickest clue. Gray wolves weigh about 50 to 110 pounds and stand 27 to 33 inches at the shoulder, while coyotes weigh about 25 to 45 pounds and stand about 20 to 22 inches. Wolves also have blocky snouts and rounded ears.
Coyotes are about a third the size of wolves, but a lone animal seen at a distance can be tricky, especially where smaller Mexican wolves live. The US Fish and Wildlife Service notes that Mexican wolves are more slender and shorter than gray wolves, and can be confused with coyotes in Arizona and New Mexico.
Faces and ears are the best close-up clues. A wolf's snout is blocky and its ears are rounded and proportionally smaller. A coyote's snout is pointed and its ears look large and pointed. Wolves also have a ruff of fur around the neck and shoulders, a straight bushy tail with a black tip, and a narrow, keeled chest.

How this works
The quiz weighs size, snout, ears, tail posture and group. Each answer points to wolf or coyote, and the side with more answers wins. Snout and ears are the most reliable cues at close range, and a close score is reported as too close to call.
Dogs, smaller Mexican wolves and young animals can blur the differences, and distance makes size hard to judge. If your sighting is in an area where wolves are protected, report it to your state wildlife agency rather than guessing, and use more than one cue.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- Iowa DNR: Canid Identification, Wolves, Coyotes and Dogs, supports weight, height, snout, ears, tail and track differences (checked October 2026)
- National Park Service, Yellowstone: Coyote, supports coyote weight, height, pack structure and howling (checked October 2026)
- National Park Service, Yellowstone: Wolf Facts, supports wolf weights, pack size and howl range (checked October 2026)
- U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service: Size comparison of wolves and coyotes, supports the Mexican wolf versus coyote confusion (checked October 2026)
Field-identification guide. Wild canids can be dangerous; do not approach and report sightings to your state wildlife agency.
