Copperhead vs Corn Snake
Verdict: Check the pattern and the belly. A copperhead has hourglass bands and is venomous, while a corn snake has black-bordered blotches down the back, a spear mark on the head and a checkerboard belly.
Corn snakes and copperheads can both look tan to orange, which is why people confuse them, and why a quick check of the pattern matters. Only the copperhead is venomous. The corn snake is a slender, non-venomous snake that is found in every county of mainland Florida and avoids people and pets.
Pattern is the best tool. A copperhead's bands are narrow at the spine and flare on the sides like an hourglass, while a corn snake has distinct blotches with black borders along the back. If you can see the belly, the black and white checkerboard of a corn snake confirms it, but never pick up a snake to check.

How this works
The quiz scores five cues: back pattern, head marking, belly, build and pupil. Each answer scores for copperhead or corn snake, and the side with more answers is the result. Answer only from photos or from a safe distance, and skip any question you cannot answer without moving close to the snake.
Pattern and belly are the strongest cues. Young snakes, shedding snakes and unusual color forms can blur the picture, so if you are unsure, treat the snake as venomous and keep away. A snake that is shedding, injured or very young can look different from the typical adult described here.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- Clemson Home & Garden Information Center: Identifying Copperhead Snakes, Copperhead hourglass pattern, vertical pupil, stocky build and corn snake contrast. (checked October 2026)
- Florida Museum: Red Cornsnake, Corn snake size, blotches, spear mark, checkerboard belly and behavior. (checked October 2026)
Field-identification guide. Never rely on a guide to handle a snake, and treat any unidentified snake as potentially venomous.
Frequently asked questions
Can you mistake a corn snake for a copperhead?
Yes, especially young ones. Both can be tan to orange. Corn snakes have black-bordered blotches, a spear mark on the head and a checkerboard belly, while copperheads have hourglass bands and a plain head.
Is a corn snake venomous?
No. Corn snakes have no venom and avoid people and pets. Bites almost always happen when the snake is handled or provoked.
How big does a corn snake get compared to a copperhead?
Most adult corn snakes are about 30 to 48 inches long. Copperheads typically reach 2 to 3 feet, occasionally up to 4 feet, but are much heavier for their length.
Are copperheads aggressive?
Not usually. Copperheads strike as a last resort, typically when stepped on or closely provoked. The best protection is to watch where you step and keep your distance.
