Elk vs Moose

Verdict: Look at the antlers and the color. Bull elk have branching, non-flat antlers and a pale rump on a reddish body, while bull moose have flat, palmate antlers and a dark, black-brown coat with an overhanging snout.

Tell-apart quiz

Both are large deer, but moose are bigger and darker. Adult male moose weigh 900 to 1,400 pounds and stand 5 to 6.5 feet at the shoulder, according to the National Park Service at Denali. The National Wildlife Federation puts elk and caribou at about 3 to 5 feet tall.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife points to color and face. Elk are reddish to lighter brown with darker legs, a chestnut neck, a slender snout and a pale yellow rump patch. Moose look black-brown with whitish-gray legs and an overhanging snout. Sound is a giveaway too: a high-pitched bugle is an elk.

When you are looking at which

Elk

  • The animal has a pale rump patch and a reddish body with darker legs.
  • You see branching antlers with obvious brow tines near the base.
  • You hear a loud high-pitched bugle in fall.
  • It is part of a herd that moves across the landscape.

Moose

  • The animal looks black-brown and very tall, with pale lower legs and a droopy bulbous nose.
  • The antlers are flat and wide like a paddle with points around the edge.
  • A flap of skin hangs from the throat.
  • It is alone, standing in a marsh or willow flat.

How this works

The quiz uses antlers, color, snout, markings and group behavior. Each answer points to elk or moose, and the side with more answers wins. A close score is reported as too close to call, and then you should check antlers and color again.

Moose shed antlers after breeding season, and antlers are grown by males, so they are not always visible. Color and snout shape work year-round, which makes them the better backup cues. These are North American elk and moose; Eurasian species of the same names are different animals.

Frequently asked questions

Which is bigger, an elk or a moose?

The moose. Denali National Park lists adult male moose at 900 to 1,400 pounds and 5 to 6.5 feet at the shoulder. The National Wildlife Federation lists elk at about 3 to 5 feet.

How do elk antlers differ from moose antlers?

Bull elk antlers branch with clear brow tines and are not palmated. Bull moose antlers are palmate, with a flattened area like a palm and tines pointing up, and can span about 5 feet or more.

What do elk and moose sound like?

The National Wildlife Federation says an elk gives a loud, high-pitched bugle, while moose wail and grunt.

Are moose and elk found in the same places?

They can share terrain. Colorado Parks and Wildlife notes both live in similar Colorado country, and the National Wildlife Federation places elk in the Rockies and western states and moose in northern New England and Alaska.
