Dolphin vs Porpoise
Verdict: Look at the snout and the dorsal fin. A dolphin has a distinct beak and a curved, hooked fin. A porpoise has a short rounded face and a small triangular fin, and a stockier body overall.
Dolphins and porpoises are both toothed whales, and people mix them up constantly on beaches and boat tours. NOAA counts about 32 dolphin species but only six porpoise species, so most animals you meet on a coastal boat tour are dolphins. The famous orca is actually the largest dolphin.
Behavior helps. Dolphins are chatty, social and often approach boats, while porpoises are shy, travel in small groups and tend to avoid vessels. Teeth tell the story too, but you will never see them from a boat: dolphin teeth are cone-shaped and porpoise teeth are flat and spade-shaped.
Dolphin vs Porpoise side by side
| Trait | Dolphin | Porpoise |
|---|---|---|
| Snout | Distinct, elongated beak | Short face, rounded, no real beak |
| Dorsal fin | Curved or hooked, sickle-like | Triangular and fairly small |
| Body shape | Longer and leaner | Shorter and stockier, portly |
| Typical length | About 6 to 12 ft on average | Up to about 7 ft at most |
| Teeth | Cone-shaped | Flat, spade-shaped |
| Group size | Large pods, sometimes megapods | Small groups, often two or three |
| Around boats | Curious, may approach or bow-ride | Shy, tends to avoid boats |
| Species count | About 32 | Six |
| Range | Every ocean, many warm waters | Narrower, mostly colder coastal waters of the Atlantic and Pacific |

When you are looking at which
Dolphin
- You see a clear beak, even a short one, and a sickle-shaped fin.
- A long, sleek animal is riding the bow wave of your boat.
- A big group of 20 or more is leaping and whistling together.
- You are in warm tropical or temperate water far from cold northern coasts.
Porpoise
- The face looks blunt and rounded with no beak, and the fin is a small triangle.
- A small animal, roughly under 7 feet, rolls at the surface in a group of two or three.
- It keeps its distance and disappears when your boat approaches.
- You are in cold coastal water in the northern Atlantic or Pacific.
How this works
The quiz uses five things you can see from a boat or a beach: face shape, fin shape, body build, reaction to boats and group size. Each answer points to one animal, and the side with more answers wins. A close score is reported as too close to call.
Face and fin are the most reliable cues. Boat behavior and group size are tendencies only. Some dolphins, such as the orca, are large, and young animals can look different, so a poor view can mislead. Marine mammal laws require you to keep a safe distance.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- NOAA Fisheries: What's the Difference Between Dolphins and Porpoises?, supports beak, fin, teeth, body and behavior differences (checked October 2026)
- NOAA National Ocean Service: Dolphin or porpoise, supports species counts, fin shape and teeth (checked October 2026)
- National Marine Sanctuary Foundation: Dolphin vs. Porpoise, supports typical lengths, group size and range (checked October 2026)
Field-identification guide. Marine mammals are protected in the US, so watch from a distance and do not feed or touch them.
Frequently asked questions
Is a porpoise a type of dolphin?
No. They are separate families of toothed whales. Both are cetaceans, but dolphins have beaks and curved fins, while porpoises have rounded faces and triangular fins.
How many species of dolphins and porpoises are there?
NOAA's National Ocean Service counts about 32 dolphin species and six porpoise species.
Which one is bigger?
Dolphins generally. The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation says dolphins average about 6 to 12 feet, while porpoises top out around 7 feet. The orca is the largest dolphin.
Why do porpoises avoid boats?
They are described as shy and less social than dolphins. NOAA Fisheries notes porpoises tend to avoid boats, and you should keep at least 50 yards from dolphins you see.
