Hornet vs Wasp

Verdict: All hornets are wasps, but only a few wasps are hornets. The bigger, smooth-bodied insect with a large head and a high, enclosed nest is the hornet. Open umbrella nests or ground nests point to other wasps.

Tell-apart quiz

Hornets are a specialized group inside the wasp family, so the real question is which kind of wasp you have. Old Farmer's Almanac and University of Kentucky Entomology both stress a naming trap: the bald-faced hornet is actually a type of yellowjacket, not a true hornet. The European hornet is a true one.

Nests give the best clue. Paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, yellowjackets often nest underground or in wall voids, and hornets build large enclosed nests high in trees, shrubs or on buildings. Yellowjackets are the ones most likely to sting when you disturb a nest, so keep your distance.

When you are looking at which

Hornet

  • The insect is big, smooth and heavy-headed, and its nest hangs high in a tree.
  • The nest is a gray football or sits sealed inside a hollow tree.
  • It is black and white and bigger than a yellowjacket, which points to the bald-faced type often called a hornet.
  • You are reading a label or news story that uses the word hornet.

Wasp

  • The nest is an open umbrella with visible cells under an eave or porch light.
  • The insect has a thin waist and is brown or rust-colored with long dangling legs.
  • Wasps are coming out of a hole in the ground, a wall or a crawlspace; that is usually a yellowjacket.
  • The insect has bold yellow and black markings, which fits a yellowjacket.

How this works

The quiz scores nest location, nest shape, color, waist and entrance. Each answer points to hornet or other wasp, and the side with more answers wins. A close score is reported as too close to call, and you should then look at the nest again.

This is a rough guide, since hornet really means a specific group and common names are used loosely. Many yellow and black insects look alike, and other wasp types exist that this quiz does not cover. For a nest near people, ask a local extension office or a pest professional.

Frequently asked questions

Is a hornet a wasp?

Yes. All hornets are wasps, but hornets are only one group within the wasp family. Most wasps you see around a house are paper wasps or yellowjackets.

Is a bald-faced hornet a real hornet?

No. Despite the name, the bald-faced hornet is a type of yellowjacket. The European hornet is the true hornet found in the US.

Which is more dangerous, a hornet or a wasp?

It depends on the species. University of Kentucky Entomology calls yellowjackets arguably the most dangerous stinging insects in the US, and paper wasps are described as not very aggressive.

Where do hornets and wasps build nests?

Hornets build high in trees, bushes or on buildings. Paper wasps nest under eaves, gutters and porch lights, and yellowjackets nest underground or in walls and attics.
