Lizard vs Salamander
Verdict: Touch aside, look at the skin. Lizards are reptiles with dry, scaly skin, while salamanders are amphibians with moist, smooth skin that must stay damp to survive.
Lizards and salamanders share a four-legged, long-tailed body shape, but they belong to entirely different groups. Lizards are reptiles with dry, scaly skin. Salamanders are amphibians with moist, porous skin that can even help them breathe. The shape is a case of similar bodies from different ancestors.
Where the animal is gives a strong hint. Lizards thrive in many dry and sunny places. Salamanders must stay where they will not dry out, such as under logs or leaves, underground or in water, and they emerge on damp nights. Most lizards also have visible ear openings, and lizard eggs are leathery and buried, while salamander eggs sit in clear jelly.
Lizard vs Salamander side by side
| Trait | Lizard | Salamander |
|---|---|---|
| Group | Reptile | Amphibian |
| Skin | Dry and scaly | Smooth, moist and porous |
| Breathing | Lungs only | Skin, gills, lungs, or a mix; some species have no lungs |
| Ear openings | Most have visible ear openings | Typically no obvious external ears |
| Eggs | Leathery, partly calcified shells buried in soil or sand | Laid in clear jelly, usually in water, where larvae hatch |
| Habitat | Many dry, warm land habitats | Damp places: under logs or leaves, underground or in water |
| Species in Indiana | About 6 | About 23 |
| Handling | Watch from a distance | Skin oils can harm them, so avoid bare hands |

When you are looking at which
Lizard
- The skin looks dry, with small overlapping scales, and the animal basks in the sun.
- You can see a small ear opening on each side of the head.
- It runs quickly across a dry rock, wall, fence or sandy ground.
- The tail broke off and wriggles, which many lizards do when threatened.
Salamander
- The skin looks smooth, wet and shiny, with no scales.
- You found it under a log, rock or leaf litter, or in a stream or pond.
- It came out on a damp night after rain.
- Its eggs, if you find them, sit in a clear jelly mass in water.
How this works
The quiz covers five cues: skin, ear openings, where the animal was, eggs and timing. Each answer scores for lizard or salamander, and the side with more answers decides the result. Skin is easiest to judge from a clear photo, even a quick phone shot, without touching the animal.
Skin is the most reliable cue. Ear openings can be small, and habitat and timing overlap because some salamanders are active after rain in warm weather and some lizards hide. Use two or three cues together. Never handle the animal to check, because dry hands can harm a salamander.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- Purdue University Extension: Is it a salamander? No, it is a lizard, Dry scaly lizards versus moist-skinned salamanders, eggs, habitat and breathing. (checked October 2026)
- National Park Service: Amphibians, Great Smoky Mountains, Smooth moist skin, lungless species, and do not touch salamanders. (checked October 2026)
- Britannica Kids: Lizard, Lizards have scales, claws, eyelids and ear openings, with leathery eggs. (checked October 2026)

Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between a lizard and a salamander?
Lizards are reptiles with dry, scaly skin and lungs. Salamanders are amphibians with moist, smooth skin that helps them breathe. Salamanders need damp places, while lizards live in many dry habitats.
Can a salamander live out of water?
Yes, but only in damp places. Many salamanders live under logs or leaves or underground, where they will not dry out. Some stay in water, and others emerge on damp nights.
Do salamanders have lungs?
Some do and some do not. Salamanders can breathe through the skin, gills or lungs. The Great Smoky Mountains alone have 25 species of lungless salamanders, which breathe through the skin and mouth lining.
Is it safe to pick up a salamander?
Better not to. The National Park Service says oils and substances on human skin can be potentially fatal to salamanders. Look without touching, and wash your hands after any contact.
