Butterfly vs Moth
Verdict: Look at the antennae. Butterflies always have knobs on the ends, while moth antennae are feathery or bare without knobs. Butterflies also hold their wings upright at rest, and most fly by day.
Both belong to the same insect order, so the differences are tendencies with a few strong exceptions. The University of Kentucky's insect guide calls the antennae the key sign: butterflies always have knobs at the tips. Moths have feathery or bare antennae with no knobs.
Resting posture and timing help next. The Library of Congress notes that butterflies fold their wings upright over their backs, while moths hold theirs tent-like over the body. Butterflies fly mostly by day and moths mostly at night, though some moths are bright and daytime fliers, so activity alone is not proof.
Butterfly vs Moth side by side
| Trait | Butterfly | Moth |
|---|---|---|
| Antennae | Club-shaped, with a knob at the tip | Feathery, saw-edged or bare, no knob |
| Wings at rest | Folded upright along the back | Held tent-like over the body |
| Active | Mostly daytime | Mostly at night |
| Typical look | Larger frame, vivid wing patterns | Smaller, duller coloring |
| Pupa | Chrysalis: hard, smooth, no silk covering | Cocoon wrapped in silk |
| Wing coupling | No frenulum | Frenulum links the wings for flight |
| Exceptions | Few; the antenna knob is the steady rule | Some are brightly colored and fly by day |

When you are looking at which
Butterfly
- The antennae end in small knobs or clubs, like thin sticks with a bulb.
- The wings fold straight up over the back when it lands.
- It is flying in daylight and has vivid wing patterns.
- You find a smooth, hard chrysalis hanging from a plant.
Moth
- The antennae look feathery, saw-edged or are simple threads with no knob.
- The wings sit flat or tent-like over the body.
- It is at your porch light after dark and has a duller, smaller look.
- You find a cocoon wrapped in a covering of silk.
How this works
The quiz uses antennae, resting wings, flight time, color and pupa type. Each answer points to butterfly or moth, and the side with more answers wins. A close score is reported as too close to call, and then you should look at the antennae.
Antennae are the most dependable clue. The other four are tendencies, and scientists note the distinctions blur as new species are studied. Some moths show butterfly-like traits such as bright colors and daytime flight, so a tie means you should check the antennae.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- University of Kentucky Entomology: Butterfly and Moth Antennae, supports the knobbed versus feathery antenna rule (checked October 2026)
- Library of Congress: How can you tell the difference between a butterfly and a moth?, supports wings at rest, activity time, color and pupa differences (checked October 2026)
Field-identification guide. Some species break the usual rules, so use several cues together.
Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest way to tell a butterfly from a moth?
Check the antennae. Butterflies always have a knob at the end, while moth antennae are feathery or bare and lack knobs.
Do moths fly only at night?
No. Moths are generally nocturnal, but some fly by day and a few are brightly colored. Library of Congress notes exceptions exist in both groups.
Do butterflies make cocoons?
No. A butterfly forms a hard, smooth chrysalis with no silk covering. A moth makes a cocoon wrapped in a silk covering.
How do butterflies and moths rest?
Butterflies fold their wings upright along their backs. Moths hold their wings tent-like over their bodies, covering the abdomen.
