Lion vs Tiger
Verdict: Coat pattern settles it: tigers have dark stripes on orange fur, while lions are plain tawny, and only adult male lions carry a mane. Lions also live in groups; tigers live alone.
Lions and tigers are the two biggest cats in the world, and they are closely related big cats. At a glance both are large, muscular and tawny to orange, which is why photos and zoo signs cause arguments. The easiest differences are visible: stripes, a mane and where the animal is standing.
Behavior and range separate them too. Lions are social, living in prides built around related females, and they favor open grassland. Tigers are mostly solitary forest cats that readily swim. Size depends on subspecies, with large Amur tigers often topping lions, so weight alone is a poor identifier.

- It is in sub-Saharan Africa, or the Gir forest of India.

How this works
This page compares the two cats on traits that zoo and encyclopedia sources agree on: coat, mane, group behavior, habitat and measured weights. The quiz asks five questions about what you can see in a photo, video or enclosure, and each answer comes with a short reason.
Light, age and photo angle can fool you. Lion cubs have spots, lionesses have no mane, and some zoo cats are hybrids, which this guide does not try to identify. Use more than one cue, and treat a tie as a reason to look again.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- Smithsonian's National Zoo: Lion, Lion weight, mane, pride size, roar range and lifespan (checked October 2026)
- Smithsonian's National Zoo: Tiger, Tiger stripes, solitary habits, swimming, cubs and lifespan (checked October 2026)
- Britannica: Tiger, Typical male tiger weight and size range (checked October 2026)

Frequently asked questions
Who would win, a lion or a tiger?
There is no real-world answer, because their wild ranges are separate today. Large Amur tigers can outweigh lions, with males up to about 660 pounds. Lions hunt cooperatively, while tigers fight alone.
Which is bigger, a lion or a tiger?
Tigers are generally the largest cats. Adult male tigers typically weigh about 350 to 500 pounds, and the biggest subspecies reaches about 660. Male lions weigh about 330 to 550 pounds, so the ranges overlap.
What is a liger?
A liger is a captive hybrid with a lion father and tiger mother. Zoo records show ligers can be bigger than either parent. It is a product of captive breeding.
Can lions and tigers live in the same place?
Almost never. Lions live in sub-Saharan Africa and India's Gir forest, while tigers live in forests across Asia. Both have lost much of their historic range.
