Portable vs Window Air Conditioner
Verdict: Choose a window unit when you can use a window, since the Department of Energy estimates portable ACs use about twice as much energy. Choose a portable when windows or rules block a window unit.
A window unit sits in the opening and sends heat outside with its compressor outdoors. A portable keeps everything in the room and vents through a hose, which makes it noisier. The Department of Energy estimates portable ACs use about twice as much energy as a typical new window AC, partly because they pull outside air in as they exhaust air.
Portables win on flexibility. Setup is simple, most come with a window kit, and you do not block the full window. New federal portable AC standards that took effect in January 2025 are projected to cut portable energy use by more than 20 percent, which narrows but does not erase the gap.
Portable vs Window Air Conditioner side by side
| Trait | Portable | Window Air Conditioner |
|---|---|---|
| Where the compressor sits | Inside the room | Mostly outside the window |
| Energy use | About twice a typical new window AC (DOE estimate) | Lower; ENERGY STAR models exceed the minimum by 19 to 36 percent |
| Noise | Louder, whole unit is in the room | Quieter |
| Window impact | Hose and small kit only | Blocks most of the window |
| Venting | Window, drop ceiling, dryer vent or wall | Through the window opening |
| Room size | Best under about 500 sq ft | Size to room; oversizing hurts humidity control |
| Typical BTU to room size | 8,000 BTU for about 200 sq ft, 12,000 BTU up to about 500 sq ft | Sized the same way by room area |
| Setup | Easy, most include a window kit | Installed in the window opening for the season |
| Moving it | Roll it room to room | Permanent install per season |

Which one fits you
Portable
- You rent, have casement or odd windows, or your building bans window units
- You want to move one unit between rooms
- You want to keep the window mostly open and visible
- You can accept higher power use and more noise
Window Air Conditioner
- You have a standard window and want the lowest electric bill
- You want quieter cooling in a bedroom or office
- You want an ENERGY STAR certified room unit that beats the federal minimum
- You want the best cooling per dollar for one room
How this works
The quiz compares your window access, noise tolerance, power-bill concerns and room size against the main trade-offs between the two types. It cannot account for climate, sun exposure or insulation. Quiz answers are weighed equally, and "Not sure" answers are skipped.

Frequently asked questions
Are portable air conditioners less efficient than window units?
Yes. The Department of Energy estimates portable ACs use about twice as much energy as a typical new window AC. New standards effective January 2025 are projected to reduce portable AC energy use by more than 20 percent.
Why are portable air conditioners louder?
The compressor and fans are all inside the room, whereas a window unit keeps much of the machinery outside. This Old House notes the portable can be noisy for this reason.
What BTU portable air conditioner do I need?
This Old House lists about 8,000 BTU for up to 200 sq ft, 10,000 BTU for 300 to 350 sq ft and 12,000 BTU for up to 500 sq ft. Oversizing is a mistake, because it causes short cycling and poor humidity removal.
Does a single-hose portable AC work?
It works, but single-hose models create negative pressure that pulls hot outside air into the room, which hurts efficiency. Dual-hose models avoid some of that.
