Yellow Jacket vs Wasp
Verdict: Look at the nest. A yellowjacket nest is an enclosed paper ball, often in the ground or a wall void, with thousands of workers. A paper wasp nest is an open, umbrella-shaped comb under an eave with 20 to 75.
Yellowjackets are wasps, so the question is really which wasp you have. Most people comparing the two are choosing between a yellowjacket and a paper wasp. Yellowjackets are stocky, about 3/8 to 3/4 inch long, with black and yellow bands, while paper wasps are slimmer, up to nearly 1 inch long, with longer legs and less yellow.
Behavior and nest give the clearest separation. Yellowjackets nest out of sight, defend the colony vigorously and can sting repeatedly, then scavenge at picnics and trash cans into late fall. Paper wasps build exposed combs and are less defensive, though they will bump an intruder and sting if the nest is threatened.

| Body shape | Stocky | Slender, with distinctly long legs |
| Coloring | Black and yellow bands, little hair | Yellow, reddish-brown and black; less yellow overall |
| Nest location | Underground burrows, shrubs or wall voids | Exposed, under eaves, branches or door frames |
| Nest type | Enclosed gray paper envelope | Single open comb, umbrella-shaped |
| Colony size | Thousands of workers in large nests | Around 20 to 75 members |
| Temper | Easily agitated; guards the nest and can sting without much provocation | Less defensive; may bump an intruder as a warning |

When you are looking at which
Yellow jacket
- The nest is hidden in the ground, a wall or dense shrub, with a steady stream of wasps in and out.
- The insects are stocky, black and yellow, and swarm around trash cans and picnics.
- You were stung without bothering the nest and others joined in.
- Dozens or hundreds of wasps are visible at one entrance.
Wasp (paper wasp)
- The nest is an open comb with visible cells under an eave, deck rail or door frame.
- The insects are slim with long legs trailing in flight and less yellow, often reddish-brown.
- There are only a handful of wasps on the nest, up to about 75.
- They tolerate you nearby and bump you as a warning before stinging.
How this works
The quiz uses five cues that university extension guides list for separating yellowjackets from paper wasps: nest site, nest shape, body shape and color, colony size and food behavior. Nest evidence is the strongest of them, and size is the weakest because queens, workers and species overlap.
It compares yellowjackets with paper wasps, not every wasp. Hornets, mud daubers and solitary wasps differ again. Never approach a nest to check; watch from a distance or ask a pest professional or your local extension office to identify it from a photo.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- University of Maryland Extension: Social Wasps, Size, markings, nests, colony size and temper of yellowjackets and paper wasps (checked October 2026)
- Oklahoma State University Extension: Paper Wasps, Yellowjackets and Other Stinging Wasps, Shape, nest type, alarm chemicals, repeated stings and autumn scavenging (checked October 2026)
- University of Maine Cooperative Extension: Hornets, Wasps and Yellowjackets, Ground nests, aggression and colony growth through summer (checked October 2026)

Frequently asked questions
Is a yellow jacket a wasp?
Yes. Yellowjackets are social wasps. When people say wasp they usually mean a paper wasp, which is slimmer, has longer legs and builds an open, umbrella-shaped nest.
Which is more aggressive, yellowjackets or paper wasps?
Yellowjackets. They defend the nest vigorously, can sting repeatedly and release alarm chemicals that recruit nestmates. Paper wasps are less defensive and may bump an intruder as a warning.
Why are yellowjackets worse in the fall?
They scavenge for sweet and protein foods, and colonies are at their largest in mid to late summer. That puts many wasps near picnics, trash cans and outdoor meals into late fall.
How many wasps are in each nest?
A large yellowjacket nest can hold thousands of workers, while a paper wasp nest holds around 20 to 75 adults.
