Bald Eagle vs Golden Eagle

Verdict: Check the legs and the head. Golden eagles have feathers down to the feet and a small head with a golden nape. Bald eagles have bare yellow legs, a big bill and a head that looks large.

Tell-apart quiz

Both eagles are huge, dark brown birds with wingspans of roughly 6 to 7 feet, so size alone does not settle it. Adults are easy: a bald eagle has a white head and tail, and a golden eagle is dark with a gold wash on the back of the head and neck.

Young birds are the hard case, because immature bald eagles are dark with a mottled white pattern that can look like a golden eagle. Look at the legs, the bill, the shape of the wings in a glide and where you are. Golden eagles are mostly a western bird and favor open, hilly country.

When you are looking at which

Bald Eagle

  • Bare yellow legs or ankles, with no feathers showing, even on a dark young bird.
  • A big head and heavy bill, soaring on flat wings over water or a shoreline.
  • A white head and tail on an adult, or a messy white-mottled body on a younger bird.
  • Fishing or perched near a lake, river, reservoir or coast.

Golden Eagle

  • Legs feathered all the way to the feet, like wearing pants.
  • A golden wash on the back of the head and neck in good light.
  • Wings held in a slight V with a long tail and a small head.
  • A dark bird with crisp white patches at the base of the tail and in the wings, over open hills or mountains.

How this works

Each question points to one species based on a field mark. The quiz counts how many cues favor each eagle, and gives a tie when they split. Skipping a cue you cannot see is fine. The legs and head cues count most, since they hold for every age, while white patterns change as young birds mature over four to five years.

Eagle plumage changes with age and some features, like wing shape, take practice. Treat the result as a strong hint and confirm with a photo and a local birder or eBird, especially for immature birds. If you can, photograph the bird in flight and perched, then compare the images with a field guide or ask a local raptor group.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell a juvenile bald eagle from a golden eagle?

Check the legs and the white pattern. Golden eagles have feathered legs and crisp white patches at the tail base and in the wings, while young bald eagles have bare yellow legs and a messier mottled pattern.

Which is bigger, a bald eagle or a golden eagle?

They overlap. Bald eagles average a little heavier and have a bigger head and bill, while golden eagles can have a similar or slightly larger wingspan range. Size is a poor deciding cue.

Do golden eagles live in the eastern United States?

They are mostly a western U.S. bird, with scattered birds in the East, often seen in migration in fall. Bald eagles live across much of the country and Canada.

How long does a bald eagle take to get its white head?

About four to five years. Until then it is dark-headed and often mistaken for a golden eagle.
