Python vs Boa

Verdict: The most reliable difference is reproduction: pythons lay eggs and boas give birth to live young. Range helps too, since pythons are Old World snakes and most boas are from the Americas.

Which one fits you

Pythons and boas are both large, non-venomous constrictors that kill by tightening coils, so they are often mistaken for each other. They belong to separate families, Pythonidae and Boidae. Pythons live in Africa, Asia and Australia. Boas are found mainly in the Americas, with some species in Africa, Asia and Pacific islands.

Size is not a clean separator. Pythons span from pygmy species around 23 inches to reticulated pythons near 33 feet, and boas span from 16-inch sand boas to anacondas of about 30 feet. Anacondas are boas, which surprises many people. Reproduction and range are better clues than length.

When you are looking at which

Python

  • The female is coiled around a clutch of eggs, or the snake was hatched from an egg.
  • It is native to Africa, Asia or Australia, and the label says ball, Burmese, reticulated or carpet python.
  • You can see pits along the lip scales, small dents along the jaw line.
  • Reptile keepers describe it as a python, and the largest examples come from Asia.

Boa

  • The female gave birth to live, fully formed young, sometimes wrapped in a membrane.
  • It is native to Central or South America, and the label says boa constrictor, rainbow boa or anaconda.
  • It is an anaconda, which is a boa despite the different name.
  • Any pits are located between scales rather than on lip scales.

How this works

The quiz asks about reproduction, range, jaw pits, common name and maximum size. Each answer favors the family most associated with that cue, and the note under each question names both so you can see the reasoning, including which cues are weaker or overlap.

The result is a field guide, not a lab test, and each cue is explained in the note under its question. Trade names can be loose and some boa species live outside the Americas, so confirm any uncertain animal with a herpetologist or a reptile veterinarian before you rely on the result.

Frequently asked questions

Is an anaconda a python or a boa?

An anaconda is a boa. Anacondas belong to the boa family Boidae, and the green anaconda is among the heaviest snakes in the world.

Do pythons or boas lay eggs?

Pythons lay eggs, with clutches of 2 to 100 eggs depending on species, and the mother coils around them. Boas bear live young.

Are pythons and boas venomous?

No. Both are constrictors that kill by tightening coils around prey and do not use venom. Large specimens can still bite, so they need experienced handling.

Which grows bigger, a python or a boa?

Both can be huge. The reticulated python reaches about 33 feet while the largest anacondas reach about 30 feet and 280 pounds, so the heaviest snakes are boas and the longest are pythons.
