Nylon vs Polyester

Verdict: Choose nylon where toughness and abrasion resistance matter most, as in packs, hosiery and heavy-wear carpet. Choose polyester for fabric that resists water, stains, wrinkles and shrinking.

Which one fits you

Nylon and polyester are the two workhorse synthetic fibers, and tags often list one or the other. Nylon is a polyamide first made at DuPont in 1935. Polyester in clothing is nearly always polyethylene terephthalate, the same plastic used in many drink bottles, and it is common in clothing and home furnishings.

In use they behave differently. Nylon is tough, elastic and resistant to wear, but it absorbs some moisture. Polyester is hydrophobic, which helps it resist stains and wrinkles but can feel less breathable. Which is better depends on the job, so match the fiber to how the fabric will be used.

TraitNylonPolyester
Chemical familyPolyamide, such as nylon 6,6Polyester, mostly polyethylene terephthalate (PET)
MoistureHygroscopic; absorbs moistureHydrophobic; resists absorbing liquids
ToughnessHigh resistance to wear, heat and chemicals; excellent abrasion resistanceStrong and resistant to weather and environmental exposure
ElasticityTough and elastic when drawnResists shrinking and wrinkling in the wash
Melting rangeAbout 190 to 350 degrees C, depending on typeAbout 160 to 280 degrees C
StainsCarpet nylon stains easily because of dye sitesHighly stain-resistant
Carpet behaviorWears well; used widely in carpetTends to crush and mat down

Which one fits you

Nylon

  • You need maximum abrasion resistance, such as a pack, rope or heavy-traffic carpet.
  • The item must stay elastic and tough, like hosiery or webbing.
  • You can accept that nylon absorbs some moisture and can stain.
  • You are choosing carpet for a busy hallway where wear matters more than stains.

Polyester

  • You want fabric that resists stains, water and wrinkles.
  • Shrinking in the wash is a worry for you.
  • You are buying clothing or furnishings that must hold their shape.
  • You prefer a fiber that can be made from recycled PET bottles.

How this works

This page compares the two fibers on chemistry, moisture handling, toughness, heat range and use, drawing on encyclopedia entries for each. The quiz asks five questions about how the item will be used, washed and cared for, and each answer carries a short explanation.

Real fabrics vary with yarn size, weave, finish and blends, so the table shows typical behavior rather than guarantees. Many garments blend the two. Check the label and the manufacturer's care guidance for the specific item before you decide on one or the other.

Frequently asked questions

Is nylon stronger than polyester?

Nylon is known for high tensile strength and excellent abrasion resistance. Polyester is strong too and resists weather, but nylon usually wins for wear-heavy uses such as ropes and packs.

Which dries faster, nylon or polyester?

Polyester is hydrophobic and has difficulty absorbing liquids, so it generally sheds water readily. Nylon is hygroscopic and absorbs more moisture. Fabric weight and weave also change drying time.

Which is better for carpet?

Nylon is a common carpet fiber with excellent wear, but it stains easily because of its dye sites. Polyester resists stains but tends to crush and mat down, so it suits lower-traffic rooms.

Does polyester shed microplastics?

Yes. Research cited in reference material estimated about 496,000 fibers released from a 6 kg load of pure polyester fabric. Washing synthetics less often and on gentle cycles is a reasonable way to cut shedding.
