Chlorine Pool vs Salt Water
Verdict: Salt water pools cost less in yearly chemicals but need a $1,000 to $2,500 generator and new cells every 3 to 5 years. Over a decade the savings can be modest.
A salt water pool is still a chlorine pool. A generator turns dissolved salt into chlorine instead of you adding it. Fixr puts chlorine pool chemicals at $300 to $800 a year, against under $100 a year for salt and chemicals on a salt system.
The savings are partly eaten by equipment. Swim University gives a conversion cost of $1,000 to $2,500 and says the cell needs replacing every 3 to 5 years, at $200 to $700. Fixr adds about 500 watts of generator power, or $36 to $48 a year. The calculator adds it all up over your ownership period.
Chlorine Pool vs Salt Water side by side
| Trait | Chlorine Pool | Salt Water |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment cost to start | None beyond the standard pump and filter | Generator $400 to $1,800 plus $300 to $500 installation, $750 to $2,425 total (Fixr) |
| Conversion total | Not applicable | $1,000 to $2,500 (Swim University) |
| Yearly chemicals | $300 to $800 | Less than $100 in salt and chemicals |
| Generator electricity | None | About 500 watts, adding $36 to $48 a year |
| Cell replacement | None | Every 3 to 5 years, $200 to $700 |
| Initial salt | None | $50 to $125 (Fixr), up to $250 (Swim University) |
| Long-term savings | Baseline | Some owners save up to 50% on chemicals, but equipment costs can offset it |
| Warm climates | Needs more chemical treatment too | Generator runs more and cells wear faster, shrinking savings |

Which one fits you
Chlorine Pool
- You want the lowest startup cost and no generator to buy, install or replace.
- You plan to sell or close the pool within a few years and will not recover conversion costs.
- You live in a hot climate where salt cells wear out faster and savings shrink.
- You are comfortable buying and adding chemicals yourself as you do now.
Salt Water
- You plan to keep the pool for 10 years or more and want lower chemical purchases.
- You want to cut yearly chemical purchases from $300 to $800 down to under $100.
- You can pay $750 to $2,425 up front for the system and installation.
- You are prepared to replace the cell every 3 to 5 years for $200 to $700.
How this works
This page compares the two pool types using published installed-cost ranges from two pool-cost sources. It covers chemical, electrical and equipment costs only, and does not rank brands or judge water feel and comfort. Sources are listed below, and both note that long-term savings are not guaranteed.
The calculator uses midpoints of the published ranges and spreads cell replacement evenly across the years. If your own bills differ, replace the yearly chemical and electricity figures with real numbers from your receipts. Pool size matters too, because larger pools need more chemicals and larger generators.
Midpoints of published ranges: Swim University conversion $1,000 to $2,500; Fixr chlorine chemicals $300 to $800, salt under $100 per year, electricity $36 to $48, cell $200 to $700 every 3 to 5 years. Other pool costs such as pumps, water and heating are the same for both and are left out.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- Fixr: Saltwater vs Chlorine Pool, Yearly chemical costs, generator price, cell life and electricity use. (checked October 2026)
- Swim University: Salt Water Pool Conversion, Conversion cost range, cell lifespan and long-term cost comparison. (checked October 2026)
Planning estimates. Pool size, climate and local prices change both options.
Frequently asked questions
Is a salt water pool cheaper than a chlorine pool?
On yearly chemicals, yes: under $100 versus $300 to $800 per Fixr. But conversion costs $1,000 to $2,500 and cells need replacing, so Swim University says long-term costs can end up roughly equivalent.
How often does a salt cell need replacing?
Every 3 to 5 years according to both Fixr and Swim University, at about $200 to $700 per cell. Warm climates can shorten that because the generator runs longer.
How much does it cost to convert to salt water?
Swim University says most conversions fall between $1,000 and $2,500, covering the generator, starting salt and installation. Fixr's range, $750 to $2,425, is similar.
Does a salt water pool use electricity?
Yes. Fixr says a salt generator draws about 500 watts, which adds roughly $36 to $48 a year to your electric bill compared with a chlorine pool.
