EV vs Hybrid
Verdict: Choose an EV if you can charge at home and your trips are predictable. Choose a hybrid if you cannot plug in at home or want no range planning and a lower purchase price.
An all-electric vehicle runs only on a battery you charge from the grid. The Department of Energy says EVs convert over 77 percent of grid electricity to power at the wheels, compared with 12 to 30 percent for conventional vehicles. A hybrid pairs a gas engine with a motor and battery that the engine and regenerative braking charge, so it never plugs in.
The real decision is usually charging access and trip pattern. Consumer Reports says home charging makes an EV practical, while apartment dwellers often fit a hybrid better. Plug-in hybrids sit between the two with about 20 to 40 miles of electric range. This page compares EVs with standard hybrids.
EV vs Hybrid side by side
| Trait | EV | Hybrid |
|---|---|---|
| Energy source | Battery only, charged from the grid | Gas engine plus motor and battery |
| Plug required | Yes | No, battery charged by engine and braking |
| Typical range | 200 to 300 miles on a charge, premium models 200 to 400 | Normal tank range, refuel at gas stations |
| Refueling time | 3 to 12 hours full charge; fast charge to 80 percent in about 30 minutes | A few minutes at a pump |
| Energy to wheels | Over 77 percent | 12 to 30 percent for conventional engines |
| Maintenance cost per mile (DOE figure) | About $0.061 | About $0.101 for gasoline vehicles |
| Price versus gas-only car | Higher upfront costs | About $1,000 to $3,000 more than comparable gas-only |
| Home charger | Level 1 cord included; Level 2 equipment about $500 to $4,000 before installation | Not needed |
| Tailpipe emissions | None | Low tailpipe pollution |

Which one fits you
EV
- You have a garage or driveway where you can charge overnight
- Your daily driving fits within a single charge with room to spare
- You want the lowest maintenance and no tailpipe emissions
- You can plan road trips around public fast chargers
Hybrid
- You live in an apartment or cannot charge at home
- You take long trips and want to refuel in minutes without planning
- You want a smaller price jump over a gas-only model
- You want better mileage with no change in routine
How this works
The quiz maps charging access, trip patterns, planning tolerance and price priorities to the main differences between EVs and standard hybrids. It is not a cost model, because electricity, gas and vehicle prices vary by location. Quiz answers are weighed equally, and "Not sure" answers are skipped.
Range and charging times depend on model and weather. Check the specific vehicles you are considering on fueleconomy.gov. Range and charging times depend on model and weather. Check the specific vehicles you are considering on fueleconomy.gov, and price home charging before you decide. Plug-in hybrids are a third option not scored here.

Frequently asked questions
Do hybrids need to be plugged in?
No. Standard hybrids charge their battery from the engine and from regenerative braking, which captures energy normally lost when braking. Plug-in hybrids are a different type and do plug in.
Is an EV cheaper to run than a hybrid?
Usually cheaper to run per mile when charging at home, and the Department of Energy gives maintenance of about $0.061 per mile for EVs versus $0.101 for gasoline vehicles. Hybrids are not compared directly in these sources, so costs depend on your electricity and gas prices.
How far can an EV go on a charge?
Most modern EVs go 200 to 300 miles per charge, and premium models can reach 200 to 400. Fast charging to 80 percent takes around 30 minutes, while a full home charge takes 3 to 12 hours.
Is a hybrid good if I live in an apartment?
Often yes. Consumer Reports notes that charging is challenging in multi-unit housing, which makes a standard hybrid, with no plug, the easier fit.
