Frog vs Toad
Verdict: Check the skin and legs. Frogs usually have smooth, moist skin and long back legs for big jumps, while toads have drier, bumpy skin and shorter legs. Frogs also tend to stay closer to water.
Frogs and toads are both amphibians in the group that lacks a tail as adults, and the line between them is fuzzy. San Diego Zoo notes that the word frog can include both, since some frogs live away from water and some toads have smoother skin. Still, a few rules of thumb work well.
The National Park Service highlights skin, leg length, eggs and habitat. Frogs are smoother with powerful long hind legs, and their eggs form clusters. Toads are heavier and bumpier with shorter legs, and lay eggs in long strands. Toads also have parotoid glands behind the eyes that release a burning milky toxin, so keep pets away.
Frog vs Toad side by side
| Trait | Frog | Toad |
|---|---|---|

| Back legs | Long and powerful, good for big jumps | Shorter; hop or walk |
| Body | Slimmer | More heavyset |
| Eggs | Laid in clusters | Laid in long strands |
| Habitat | In or near water more often | Tolerate drier places |
| Gland behind the eye | Most lack this defense | Parotoid glands release a burning milky toxin; can also puff up |
| Exceptions | Some live away from water | Some have smooth skin |

When you are looking at which
Frog
- The skin looks smooth and moist, with no obvious bumps or warts.
- The back legs are long and the animal leaps far.
- You found it in or right next to a pond, stream or marsh.
- You find eggs in clumps rather than strings.
Toad
- The skin looks dry and bumpy, with warty bumps across the back.
- The legs are short and it hops or walks, and the body looks plump.
- You can see a swollen gland behind each eye.
- You find eggs in long strings, or it is in a yard far from water.
How this works
The quiz scores skin, legs, body, location and eggs. Each answer points to frog or toad, and the side with more answers wins. A close score is reported as too close to call, which usually means the animal is an exception to the common rules.
The rules are guidelines, not laws, since some frogs live away from water and some toads have smooth skin. Eggs are seldom seen, so skin and leg length are usually the best clues, and you should treat any single cue with caution.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- National Park Service, Upper Delaware: Frogs and Toads, supports skin, leg, egg and habitat differences (checked October 2026)
- San Diego Zoo: Frog and Toad, supports pads, parotoid glands, defenses and the blurry naming line (checked October 2026)
Field-identification guide. Avoid handling wild amphibians, and keep pets away from toads.
Frequently asked questions
Is a toad a frog?
In a loose biological sense, yes. San Diego Zoo notes the word frog can include toads, because some frogs live away from water and some toads have smooth skin. In everyday use, they are treated as two types.
Are toads dangerous to touch?
Toads have parotoid glands behind the eyes that release a burning milky toxin, so keep pets away and avoid handling them. San Diego Zoo notes most frogs lack this defense.
How do frog and toad eggs differ?
The National Park Service says frog eggs cluster together while toad eggs form elongated strands in water or moist places.
Do frogs live in water and toads on land?
Mostly. Frogs are more likely to be in or near water, and toads tolerate drier conditions. Exceptions exist on both sides.
