Husky vs Malamute

Verdict: Size and eyes separate them best: a Siberian Husky is a lighter dog of about 35 to 60 pounds that may have blue eyes, while an Alaskan Malamute is heavier, around 75 to 85 pounds, with brown eyes only.

Which one fits you

Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes are both thick-coated northern sled breeds with erect ears and curled tails, so they are mixed up constantly. Breed standards show clear differences, though. The husky was developed to pull light loads quickly over long distances, and the malamute was developed to haul heavy freight.

That job difference shows in the body. Huskies are lean, medium-sized and quick, and malamutes are larger, with heavier bone and a broader head. Mixed-breed dogs and young puppies blur the lines, so look at eyes, size and coat texture together rather than relying on color, which overlaps heavily.

  • Its coat looks coarse and longer over the shoulders, neck and back.
  • It is happy to come back home after yard time, and may be pushy with same-sex dogs.

How this works

This page compares the two breeds using breed standards and kennel club descriptions: height, weight, eyes, coat, ears and temperament. The quiz asks five questions about what you can see in the dog and how it behaves, and each answer includes a one-line reason.

Neither quiz nor table can identify a mixed-breed dog or a very young puppy, and show-line and working-line dogs can differ from the standard. Use several cues together, and ask a vet or breed club if you need to confirm a pedigree.

Frequently asked questions

Which is bigger, a husky or a malamute?

The malamute. Males stand about 25 inches and weigh about 85 pounds, while male Siberian Huskies stand 21 to 23.5 inches and weigh 45 to 60 pounds.

Can a malamute have blue eyes?

A purebred Alaskan Malamute should not. Blue eyes are a disqualification in the AKC breed standard, and Malamute eyes are almond-shaped and brown. Siberian Huskies may have blue, brown or one of each.

Which sheds more?

Both have a thick double coat and shed heavily, especially in shedding season. Malamutes have the longer, coarser coat, while huskies have a medium, smooth one. Expect regular brushing for either.

Which is easier to keep in a yard?

Neither is easy, but huskies are described as escape artists with a relentless drive to run. Malamutes are more likely to return home after yard time. Secure fencing is a must for both.
