Badger vs Wolverine
Verdict: The fastest tell is the face and habitat: an American badger has a white stripe down a flat face on open grassland, while a wolverine is a dark, bulky animal with a pale side stripe in northern forest and mountains.
Both animals are stocky, short-legged members of the weasel family, so they get confused. This page compares the American badger, the one most people in the United States mean. The honey badger of Africa and Asia and the Eurasian badger are different animals, so the comparison would change if that is what you saw.
A wolverine is the larger of the two, with males commonly twice a badger's weight. A badger is a digger of open country, built around huge front claws. A wolverine is a scavenger and hunter of cold, remote country that travels far. Where you saw the animal is often the strongest clue.

When you are looking at which
Badger
- The face has a bold white stripe from nose to head with dark cheek patches, on flat open ground.
- You see a low animal digging a burrow in prairie or sandy soil, especially one with long front claws.
- It is a medium-sized animal near rodent mounds, active mostly at night.
- You are in the western or central plains, not in northern forest or high mountains.
Wolverine
- It is dark and bulky with a pale stripe along the sides and a bushy tail, in cold northern country.
- You see it far from roads in boreal forest, tundra or high mountains, perhaps feeding on a carcass.
- Tracks or a den show a big animal using snow in late winter.
- It looks heavier and more bear-like, around 24 to 40 pounds for a male.
How this works
The quiz asks about face pattern, habitat, side stripes, behavior and rough size. Each answer favors the animal most associated with that cue, and the note under each question names both animals so you can see the reasoning behind it.
It covers the American badger and the North American wolverine only. Size and color overlap in places and animals can look different in poor light, so photos, tracks and location together give a more reliable answer than any single cue.

Frequently asked questions
Is a wolverine a type of badger?
No. Both are in the weasel family, Mustelidae, but they are different animals. The wolverine is the largest land-dwelling member of the family, and the American badger is a separate burrowing species.
Which is bigger, a badger or a wolverine?
A wolverine. Males run 24 to 40 pounds in Alaska, while American badgers typically weigh about 14 to 19 pounds, with some northern badgers heavier in fall.
Do wolverines and badgers live in the same places?
Rarely. Badgers favor open grassland and prairie across the western and central US, while wolverines live in remote northern forest, tundra and alpine areas, so ranges overlap only in a few places.
What do badgers and wolverines eat?
Badgers hunt burrowing animals such as pocket gophers, ground squirrels and prairie dogs. Wolverines rely heavily on carrion in winter and also take voles, squirrels, snowshoe hares and birds.
