Bernese Mountain Dog vs Saint Bernard

Verdict: Look at the color pattern and coat. A Bernese is black with rust and white markings and always has a long coat; a Saint Bernard is mostly white with red patches and can be longhaired or shorthaired.

Which one fits you

Both are large Swiss mountain dogs, but they come from different jobs and valleys. The Bernese Mountain Dog is a Sennenhund farm dog from the canton of Bern, used to herd cattle and pull dairy carts. The Saint Bernard was bred by monks at the Great St Bernard Hospice on the Italian-Swiss border for Alpine rescue.

Size and look differ. The Saint is the taller breed, with males commonly 28 to 35 inches, and a heavy build with a long tail. The Bernese is slightly smaller with males about 25 to 28 inches. Both are gentle and short-lived for their size, with cancer and joint problems among common causes of concern.

How this works

The quiz asks about color pattern, coat length, height, history and lifespan. Each answer favors the breed most associated with that cue, and the note under each question names both so you can see the reasoning, including which cues are weaker or overlap.

Mixed breeds and puppies can look different, and individual dogs can fall outside the ranges given here. Pedigree papers or a DNA test is the reliable confirmation, and a veterinarian can advise on the health risks of large dogs, which both of these breeds share.

Frequently asked questions

Which is bigger, a Bernese Mountain Dog or a Saint Bernard?

A Saint Bernard is taller, with males 70 to 90 cm (28 to 35 in) compared with 64 to 70 cm (25 to 28 in) for male Bernese. Saints are a giant breed with a heavier frame.

Do Saint Bernards come in short coats?

Yes. Saint Bernards come in both longhaired and shorthaired varieties, while the Bernese is the only Sennenhund breed with a long coat.

Which lives longer?

Both are short-lived. Studies give Bernese about 8 to 10 years and Saint Bernards about 9.3 years in a 2024 UK study, so neither has a clear advantage.

Are Bernese and Saint Bernards good family dogs?

Both are known as gentle. The AKC describes Berners as devoted dogs that live to please and Saints as watchful, patient and careful with children, though large size needs training and space.
