Bison vs Yak
Verdict: Look for the skirt. A yak has long hair hanging below its belly and a horse-like tail, while a bison has a shaggy front end with shorter hair on the flanks. Bison live on North American plains, yaks in high Himalayan country.
Bison and yaks are close relatives. Genetic work puts yaks as the closest living relatives of bison, and both are heavy, humped bovines. Even so, they live on different continents and look different up close. Bison are North American, while yaks come from the Himalayas, the Tibetan Plateau and neighboring high country.
Hair is the best quick cue. A yak's long fur hangs lower than its belly like a skirt and its tail is horse-like. A bison has long hair on the head and shoulders but a shorter, dense coat on its flanks. Horns differ as well, with bison horns short and curved up and male yak horns sweeping back.

How this works
The quiz asks about hair, horns, tail, location and color. Each answer favors the animal most associated with that cue, and the note under each question names both so you can see the reasoning, including which cues are weaker or overlap.
Domestic yaks are kept in some places far from Asia, and bison are raised on ranches worldwide, so location is a clue and not proof. Wild bison and yaks are large animals, so photos from a safe distance are the best way to identify them, and a park ranger can confirm any animal you are unsure about.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- National Park Service: Bison, Yellowstone, Bison weight, hump, horns, speed, diet and seasonal movement. (checked October 2026)
- Wikipedia: Domestic yak, Yak hair skirt, horns, tail, altitude, weight and uses. (checked October 2026)
- Wikipedia: American bison, Bison weight, hump, horns, coat and relation to yaks. (checked October 2026)
Field-identification guide. Wild bison are dangerous at close range, so stay at the distance your park requires.
Frequently asked questions
Are bison and yaks related?
Yes. Genetic evidence shows yaks are the closest living relatives of bison, and the genus Bos is considered paraphyletic unless bison are included in it.
Which is bigger, a bison or a yak?
Bison. Male bison weigh up to about 2,000 pounds and plains bulls about 1,600 to 1,750 pounds. Male yaks weigh 350 to 585 kilograms, about 770 to 1,290 pounds, although wild yaks can reach 1,000 kg.
Do yaks and bison have humps?
Both have a pronounced shoulder hump. The hump is not a clear way to tell them apart, so look at the hair skirt, horns and tail instead.
Where do yaks live compared with bison?
Yaks live at high elevation in the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau and have trouble in lowland heat. Bison live on North American plains, such as Yellowstone, and can travel up to 70 miles between seasonal ranges.
