Carpenter Bee vs Bumble Bee
Verdict: Look at the top of the abdomen. A shiny, mostly bare black abdomen is a carpenter bee. A fuzzy abdomen with yellow hair is a bumble bee. Round half-inch holes in wood also point to carpenter bees.
Carpenter bees and bumble bees are about the same size, roughly 3/4 to 1 inch, and both have yellow fuzz on the front of the body. The giveaway is the abdomen: carpenter bees have a shiny, nearly hairless black top, while bumble bees are fuzzy to the tip.
Their lifestyles differ too. Carpenter bees are solitary and drill nesting tunnels in bare wood, which is why people notice them near eaves and decks. Bumble bees live in small colonies, usually in old rodent burrows or other cavities. Male carpenter bees hover and dart at people but cannot sting.
Carpenter Bee vs Bumble Bee side by side
| Trait | Carpenter Bee | Bumble Bee |
|---|---|---|
| Size | About 3/4 to 1 in | Workers about 3/4 in; queens up to 1 in |
| Top of abdomen | Shiny, black and mostly hairless | Covered in hair, with yellow or orange patches |
| Social life | Solitary; each female digs her own tunnel | Social colony of a few dozen to a few hundred |
| Nest | Round hole about 1/2 in across in bare softwood, then a 6 to 12 in gallery | Old rodent burrows, tree hollows, or other cavities, usually near the ground |
| Wood damage | Tunnels can weaken wood when reused and expanded over years | None; does not bore wood |
| Behavior near you | Males hover and dart at passers-by, with no stinger | Reluctant to attack while foraging; defends the nest |
| Sting | Females can sting but rarely do; males cannot | Females can sting repeatedly when the nest is disturbed |
| Generations | One generation a year | Colony builds up through the summer, 50 to 400 workers |

When you are looking at which
Carpenter Bee
- A large bee with a glossy black rear end hovering near eaves, rails or a deck.
- Perfectly round holes about half an inch wide in unpainted wood with sawdust below.
- A male with a pale yellow face that hovers at you but cannot sting.
- Droppings and sawdust staining the wood below a nest hole.
Bumble Bee
- A round, fuzzy bee covered in hair right to the tip of the abdomen.
- A bee working flowers while carrying yellow pollen on its hind legs.
- Several bees going in and out of a hole in the ground or an old burrow.
- A loud buzzing bee that ignores you unless you disturb its nest.
How this works
The quiz scores five cues, the abdomen, nest site, group size, behavior near you and signs on the wood, and reports the species most answers favor. Unsure answers are ignored. Abdomen texture gets the most weight because it works in photos and from a few feet away, even when the bee will not hold still.
Some bees mimic others and several bumble bee species exist. If you see a shiny abdomen and round wood holes, carpenter bee is a safe bet. For persistent damage, ask your county extension office. Males can look scary, but they have no stinger. The holes, sawdust and droppings on wood are the better proof of carpenter bees.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- Penn State Extension: Carpenter Bees, Abdomen texture, nesting, male and female stinging and wood damage (checked October 2026)
- Purdue Extension: Carpenter Bees (E-252), Appearance, nest tunnels, one generation per year (checked October 2026)
- University of Maryland Extension: Carpenter Bees, Size, bumble bee comparison, gallery length and male behavior (checked October 2026)
- Texas A&M AgriLife: Bumble Bees, Bumble bee size, colony size, nests and repeated stinging (checked October 2026)

Frequently asked questions
Do carpenter bees eat wood?
No. They chew tunnels in wood to nest and raise young, but they feed on pollen and nectar. Reused tunnels can weaken wood over several years.
Can carpenter bees sting?
Males have no stinger, so the hovering ones are harmless. Females can sting but are docile and usually only do it if handled or provoked.
Do bumble bees sting more than once?
Females can sting repeatedly, unlike honey bees, but they are generally reluctant to sting away from the nest.
What attracts carpenter bees to a house?
Bare, unpainted or weathered softwood such as cedar, pine, cypress or redwood. Painting or sealing exposed wood makes it less attractive.
