Copperhead vs Water Snake
Verdict: Check the pattern shape. A copperhead's bands form an hourglass, wide on the sides and narrow at the spine, while a water snake's blotches are wider at the backbone. Round pupils also point to a water snake.
Copperheads and water snakes are among the most mixed-up snakes in the eastern US, because both are brownish, banded and often seen near water. Only the copperhead is venomous. Because the mistake can go both ways, with harmless water snakes often taken for copperheads, it helps to know the few cues that actually hold up.
Head shape is the least reliable clue, since many harmless snakes can flatten their heads into a triangle when threatened. Pattern shape and pupil shape are better, but a pupil check means getting too close. Water snakes also darken and fade with age, so older ones can be hard to read. Use photos and distance.
Copperhead vs Water Snake side by side
| Trait | Copperhead | Water Snake |
|---|---|---|
| Band shape | Hourglass: wide on the sides, narrow across the back | Blotches wider at the backbone, bulb-shaped |
| Pupil | Vertical and elliptical, like a cat's, with a yellow eye | Round |
| Head | Arrow-shaped or triangular | Rounded, but can flatten to look triangular, so not reliable |
| Typical length | 2 to 3 ft, up to about 4 ft | Up to about 3 ft, females larger |
| Body color | Coppery tan | Pattern fades and skin darkens with age |
| Venom | Venomous | Not venomous |
| Habitat | Appalachia and beyond, and it also swims | Stays within a few hundred yards of water, basks on rocks and branches |
| Young | Bright yellow tail tip, venomous from birth | Pattern more distinct when young, fading with age |

When you are looking at which
Copperhead
- The bands look like hourglasses lying sideways, narrow where they cross the spine.
- A photo shows a vertical, cat-like pupil in a yellow eye.
- The snake is thick and heavy, in a coppery tan color, in a brushy or rocky area.
- A small snake has a bright yellow tail tip.
Water Snake
- The dark blotches are widest at the backbone, so they look like bulbs, not hourglasses.
- A photo shows round pupils, not the vertical slits of a copperhead.
- The snake is basking on a rock, log or branch right at the water's edge.
- An older snake looks dark, with a faded pattern.
How this works
The quiz scores five cues: band shape, pupil, color and build, location and young-snake tail color. Each answer scores for copperhead or water snake, and the side with more answers is the result. Answer from a zoomed photo, and skip any cue that needs you to move close to the snake.
Band shape is the strongest cue and head shape is left out on purpose because it misleads. Habitat overlaps, so it only supports an answer. If you are unsure, treat the snake as venomous and keep your distance. Older water snakes darken and lose their pattern, so a plain dark snake is a reason to keep your distance.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- Clemson Home & Garden Information Center: Identifying Copperhead Snakes, Copperhead hourglass pattern, vertical pupil, size, yellow tail tip and lookalikes. (checked October 2026)
- Appalachian Voices: Mistaken Identity, Recognizing the Northern Water Snake, Water snake bulb pattern, round pupils, head-shape caveat and habitat. (checked October 2026)
Field-identification guide. Never rely on a guide to handle a snake, and treat any unidentified snake as potentially venomous.
Frequently asked questions
How do you tell a copperhead from a water snake?
Look at the bands. A copperhead's bands are narrow at the spine and wide on the sides, like hourglasses. A water snake's blotches are wider at the backbone. Pupil shape also helps, vertical for copperheads and round for water snakes.
Can a copperhead be in the water?
Yes. Copperheads swim and live in areas across Appalachia that include water, so seeing a snake near a stream does not rule one out. Water snakes, though, rarely stray far from water.
Are water snakes venomous?
No. Northern water snakes are not venomous, but any wild snake can bite if grabbed. They are often mistaken for copperheads.
Is a triangular head a reliable sign of a copperhead?
No. Copperheads do have an arrow-shaped head, but many harmless snakes flatten their heads into a triangle when threatened. Pupil shape and band pattern are more dependable.
