Corgi vs Shiba Inu

Verdict: Check the legs and the tail. A corgi is low and long-bodied with a short or bobbed tail, while a Shiba Inu is leggier with a thick tail curled over its back.

Which one fits you

Both breeds are small to medium, fox-faced and double-coated, and red-and-white versions are easy to confuse in a photo. This page compares the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, the more common corgi, with the Shiba Inu. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is a separate breed and is not covered here.

The build is the giveaway. A Pembroke stands 10 to 12 inches tall on short legs, while a Shiba stands 13.5 to 16.5 inches on proportionate legs. Temperament differs as well: corgis are described as outgoing and biddable herding dogs, while Shibas are independent, aloof with strangers and prone to wandering if off leash.

Shiba Inu

How this works

The quiz uses cues you can see in a photo: height, tail, leg length, ears and face markings. Each answer points to corgi or Shiba, and each cue line says how reliable the clue is, so a stubby tail alone never outweighs leg length.

Pembroke corgis are covered here, and Cardigans, Shiba mixes and corgi crosses differ. A dog with mixed ancestry can break the pattern, such as a short-legged dog with a curled tail. For a pedigree answer, ask for registration papers from a kennel club.

Frequently asked questions

How can you tell a corgi from a Shiba Inu?

Leg length and tail are the main clues. A corgi has short legs and a short tail, and a Shiba has longer legs and a thick tail curled over its back.

Which sheds more, a corgi or a Shiba?

Both shed. VCA rates the Pembroke corgi 4 out of 5 for shedding, while the Shiba sheds heavily once or twice a year and is low-maintenance otherwise. Plan to brush weekly either way.

Which is easier to train?

Corgis are described as biddable and fun-loving and respond to reward-based training. Shibas are independent and dignified, and they tend to wander, so they need secure fencing and a leash.

Do corgis and Shibas have health problems?

Shibas are prone to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation and hypothyroidism. Corgis tend to gain weight, which strains the back and joints, so measure meals and exercise daily.
