Hamster vs Gerbil

Verdict: The quickest tell is the tail: a hamster has a short stub, a gerbil has a long, furred tail about as long as its body. Hamsters are solitary and have cheek pouches; gerbils are more social and jumpy.

Which one fits you

Hamsters and gerbils are both small rodents sold as pets, and pet stores often keep them side by side. They look different once you check the tail and body shape, and they need different care. Most hamster species are solitary, while gerbils are naturally social but can fight.

This page compares the common pet species, the Syrian and dwarf hamsters and the Mongolian gerbil. Lifespans are short for both, around two to three years, so owners should plan for a brief commitment and for night-time wheel-running from either animal. Check local rules, since gerbils are restricted in at least one state.

When you are looking at which

Hamster

  • The tail is a short stub, barely noticeable, on a rounded, chunky body.
  • You see big cheek pouches stuffed with food, or a loner living in its own cage.
  • It is an animal that is easy to pick up slowly but may bite if startled.
  • Pet-store label says Syrian, golden, Campbell's, winter white or Roborovski.

Gerbil

  • The tail is long and nearly as long as the body, and the animal can lose it if mishandled.
  • It jumps, climbs and burrows a lot and is sometimes active in daylight.
  • It lives with a same-sex pair or family group in a deep bedding tub.
  • Label says Mongolian gerbil, and you are not in California.

How this works

The quiz asks about tail, cheeks, housing, movement and activity timing. Tail and cheek cues are the most reliable, and the note under each question names both animals so you can see the reasoning for each answer. Two or three clear matches are a stronger signal than one.

Pet stores sometimes mix labels, and dwarf hamsters can look more like gerbils at a glance than Syrian hamsters do. Check the species, not only the label, and confirm care needs with a veterinarian who treats small mammals, because the two animals have different diets and housing needs.

Frequently asked questions

Which lives longer, a hamster or a gerbil?

Both are short-lived. VCA Animal Hospitals gives hamsters about 18 to 24 months, some reaching 36 months, and gerbils about 2 to 3 years, so gerbils usually have a slight edge.

Can hamsters and gerbils live together?

No. Different species should not share a cage. Most hamsters are strictly solitary and fight, and male gerbils housed together often fight as well.

Is a gerbil or hamster better for kids?

Neither is ideal for small children. VCA says hamsters startle and may bite and are unsuitable for unsupervised young children, and it advises against gerbils for children under 10 because they are hard to hold.

Is it legal to own a gerbil?

In most places yes, but it is illegal to buy, import or keep a gerbil as a pet in California. Check your state and local rules before buying.
