Heron vs Egret
Verdict: There is no sharp biological line, so compare actual birds. A great blue heron is gray-blue and bigger, while a great egret is all white with black legs. Check leg color on any white bird.
Heron and egret are common names rather than tidy scientific categories, so the best comparison is between actual birds. The usual pair is the great blue heron, the largest North American heron, and the great egret, a tall all-white wader. This page also notes the smaller snowy egret, since small white waders often get called herons too.
Color and size separate the common pair easily. Leg color matters when the bird is white: the great egret has black legs, while the white form of the great blue heron, found in coastal southern Florida, has lighter legs. Both fold the neck into an S-curve in flight and trail their legs, so flight posture will not help.

When you are looking at which
Heron (great blue)
- The bird is blue-gray with a thick orange-yellow bill and stands taller than any egret nearby.
- In flight, it shows broad rounded wings with very slow wingbeats and legs trailing past the tail.
- A white bird in coastal southern Florida has pale legs, which suggests the white form of the great blue heron.
- A wader that is at least 3.5 feet long, with a wingspan of about 5.5 to 6.5 feet.
Egret (great egret)
- The bird is entirely white with black legs and a yellow-orange bill.
- It is smaller and slimmer than a great blue heron standing beside it.
- A small white bird has a black bill and bright yellow feet, which points to a snowy egret.
- You see several white birds nesting together high in trees, often on an island.
How this works
The quiz covers five cues: color, leg color on white birds, size, bill and setting. Each answer scores for heron or egret, and the side with more answers decides the result. Size is hard to judge alone, so compare the bird with a nearby object or another bird before you answer.
Because heron and egret are common names, the page uses the great blue heron and great egret as the benchmark pair. Other herons, such as green and night herons, look different, and regional guides cover them. Answer only the cues you can see well, since distance and glare can hide leg and bill color.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- Cornell Lab of Ornithology: Great Blue Heron identification, Heron size, gray-blue color, S-curved flight neck, white form in Florida. (checked October 2026)
- Cornell Lab of Ornithology: Great Egret identification, Egret size, all-white plumage, black legs and nesting. (checked October 2026)
- National Audubon Society: Snowy Egret, Snowy egret size, black bill and yellow feet. (checked October 2026)
- National Wildlife Federation: Is This a Heron, Egret or Crane?, Great egrets have dark legs, white heron has lighter legs. (checked October 2026)

Frequently asked questions
Is an egret a type of heron?
The names are not strict biological categories, and egrets and herons are related wading birds. Birders usually treat egrets as the mostly white herons, but sources do not draw a firm line, so compare the individual species.
How can you tell a great egret from a great blue heron?
Color and size. The great egret is all white with black legs and 37 to 41 inches long. The great blue heron is gray-blue, larger at 38 to 54 inches, with a wingspan up to about 79 inches.
Is there a white great blue heron?
Yes. A white form of the great blue heron lives in coastal southern Florida. Compared with a great egret, its legs are lighter, and it is larger.
How do you tell a snowy egret from a great egret?
Snowy egrets are smaller, 22 to 26 inches long, with a black bill and black legs with bright yellow feet. Great egrets are larger, with a yellow-orange bill and all-black legs.
