Manatee vs Dugong
Verdict: Look at the tail. Manatees have a broad, rounded paddle, while dugongs have a two-lobed fluke like a whale. Where you are also settles it, since their ranges never overlap.
Manatees and dugongs are the two living groups of sea cows, plant-eating marine mammals that look alike at a glance. The Natural History Museum in London notes they are similar in size and coloring and both have flexible flippers. Even so, a clear look at the tail, or simply the ocean you are in, answers the question fast.
Manatees live in the Atlantic, the Caribbean and the Amazon, with three species worldwide. Dugongs live only in Indo-Pacific waters, from East Africa to Australia. Sources vary a little on finer points like snout shape and tusks, so this page leans on the tail and location first, then on the other cues.

When you are looking at which
Manatee
- The tail is a broad, rounded paddle with no notch in the middle.
- You are in Florida, the Caribbean, the Amazon basin or the Atlantic coast of West Africa.
- The animal is in a river, spring or freshwater canal rather than open salt water.
- The skin looks wrinkled and there are no tusks showing.
Dugong
- The tail has two lobes with a notch between them, similar to a whale's fluke.
- You are near East Africa, India, Southeast Asia or Australia in the Indo-Pacific.
- The snout is long and points downward, built for rooting along a seagrass bed.
- The skin looks smooth, and tusks may be visible.
How this works
The quiz asks five questions that match what a visitor can see or know: tail shape, where the animal was, skin, tusks and water type. Each answer scores for manatee or dugong, and the side with more answers is the result.
Tail shape and location are the firmest clues. Skin and tusks can be hard to see from a boat, and the freshwater question only helps if the animal was clearly in a river or spring. Photos taken from a boat or a viewing platform often show the tail only briefly, so a second look helps.

Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between a manatee and a dugong?
The tail. Manatees have a rounded, paddle-shaped tail, while dugongs have a notched, whale-like fluke. Manatees also live in the Atlantic region and dugongs live in the Indo-Pacific.
Are there dugongs in Florida?
No. Dugongs are found only in the Indo-Pacific, near coasts from East Africa to Australia. Sea cows in Florida are West Indian manatees, and the two groups' ranges do not overlap.
Can manatees live in fresh water?
Yes. Manatees use both fresh and salt water, and Save the Manatee Club notes they need access to fresh water for drinking every week or two. Dugongs stay in saltwater.
What do manatees and dugongs eat?
Both are herbivores. Manatees eat seagrasses, hydrilla, water hyacinth and similar plants, taking in roughly a tenth to a sixth of their body weight daily. Dugongs feed almost entirely on seagrass.
