Monkey vs Lemur
Verdict: Where it lives and its nose give it away. Lemurs live only in Madagascar and nearby islands and have a wet, curled nose and a longer snout, while monkeys have dry noses and live in the Americas, Africa, and Asia.
Lemurs and monkeys are both primates with grasping hands and forward-facing eyes, so zoo visitors often call a ring-tailed lemur a monkey. They belong to different branches of the primate family tree. Lemurs are strepsirrhines, an earlier branch that includes lorises and bushbabies, and monkeys are haplorrhines.
The Duke Lemur Center lists several consistent differences, from the wet nose to a grooming claw on the second toe. The range is the clearest: lemurs are found in the wild only in Madagascar, with the Comoro Islands also noted by one zoo source. Size and tail alone are not reliable, since lemurs range from mouse-sized to child-sized.
Monkey vs Lemur side by side
| Trait | Monkey | Lemur |
|---|---|---|
| Primate group | Haplorrhine (anthropoid) | Strepsirrhine (prosimian) |
| Nose | Dry | Wet and curled |
| Snout | Flatter face, shorter snout | Typically a longer snout |
| Grooming tools | Fingers and opposable thumbs | Toothcomb of six forward-pointing lower teeth and a grooming claw on the second toe |
| Wild range | Americas, Africa, and Asia | Madagascar and nearby Comoro Islands only |
| Activity | Typically active by day | Many active at night, others by day |
| Social leadership | Male-dominant hierarchies are typical | Female-dominant groups are typical |
| Size range | Wide, from small to large species | Mouse-sized (about 1 oz) to indri at 15 to 22 lb |
| Communication | Less reliance on smell | Heavy use of scent marking, plus calls and tail signals |

When you are looking at which
Monkey
- You are looking at a primate in Africa, Asia, or Central or South America.
- The nose looks dry and the face fairly flat.
- The animal grooms with its fingers and uses its hands with an opposable thumb.
- It is active by day and the group seems led by males.
Lemur
- The animal is in Madagascar, or in a zoo exhibit labeled Madagascar.
- The nose looks wet and curled and the snout is long.
- It uses a claw on the second toe to groom, or combs fur with its front teeth.
- A female seems to lead the group, or it is up and active at night.
How this works
The quiz counts how many cues match a monkey or a lemur. Range and nose are the strongest, while snout, activity, and leadership are patterns with exceptions. Answer only what you actually saw, and choose I can't tell for the rest, since a skipped cue is better than a guess.
It compares monkeys as a group with lemurs as a group. Apes, lorises, and tarsiers are other primates and are not scored. Close calls usually mean the species-level details matter. A tie means your answers were split, so check where the animal is from and then look at its nose.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- Duke Lemur Center: What Does It Mean to Be a Primate?, Wet versus dry nose, toothcomb, grooming claw, range, and social patterns. (checked October 2026)
- Duke Lemur Center: What is a Lemur?, Strepsirrhine versus haplorrhine, species count, range, and size. (checked October 2026)
- San Diego Zoo: Lemur, Madagascar and Comoro range, size extremes, groups led by females. (checked October 2026)
Educational guide. Wild primates should not be fed or touched, and lemurs are protected.
Frequently asked questions
Is a lemur a monkey?
No. Lemurs are strepsirrhine primates, an earlier branch that includes lorises and bushbabies, while monkeys are haplorrhines. They share primate traits but are different groups.
Where do lemurs live?
Only in Madagascar and the nearby Comoro Islands. Duke Lemur Center says lemur-like primates crossed to Madagascar about 55 million years ago and died out everywhere else.
How many kinds of lemurs are there?
Over one hundred living species. They range from the mouse-sized Madame Berthe's mouse lemur, about 1 ounce, to the indri, up to about 22 pounds.
What is a toothcomb?
It is a fused set of six lower front teeth that grow forward, used for grooming. Lemurs also have a grooming claw on the second toe, and monkeys have neither.
