Paper Wasp vs Mud Dauber
Verdict: Look at the nest. A paper wasp builds an open, umbrella-shaped comb of papery material, while a mud dauber plasters mud into tubes or lumps and has a very thin thread-like waist.
Both are slender wasps that nest on porches, eaves, and sheds, so homeowners often lump them together. They are quite different. A paper wasp is a social wasp that builds an exposed comb from paper-like material, and a mud dauber is a solitary wasp that builds with mud and stocks the cells with spiders.
That difference changes what you should expect. Mud daubers rarely sting and do not aggressively defend their nests, while paper wasps are relatively nonaggressive but live in a colony and may defend it. The nest and the waist are the most reliable ways to tell them apart.
Paper Wasp vs Mud Dauber side by side
| Trait | Paper wasp | Mud dauber |
|---|---|---|
| Nest material | Papery material | Mud |
| Nest shape | Single exposed comb, umbrella-like with open cells | Fist-sized lump of mud cells, or tubes like organ pipes |
| Social or solitary | Social colony | Solitary |
| Waist | Slender, long-legged | Prominent, thread-like waist |
| Color | Slender with markings that vary by species | Black with yellow, all black, or metallic blue with blue wings |
| Larval food | Caterpillars | Paralyzed spiders |
| Temperament | Relatively nonaggressive, may defend colony | Rarely stings, does not aggressively defend nest |
| Typical nest spot | Eaves, outbuildings, sometimes enclosed spaces such as light fixtures | Building eaves, overhangs, and similar structures |
| Usefulness | Beneficial caterpillar predators | Beneficial spider hunters |

When you are looking at which
Paper wasp
- The nest is a gray papery comb hanging in the open with uncovered cells.
- Many wasps crawl on the nest at once, forming a colony.
- The nest is in a light fixture, eave corner, or other exposed spot.
- The wasp has long dangling legs and a slim body.
Mud dauber
- The nest is dried mud, shaped like a fist-sized lump or a set of tubes.
- You see one wasp at a time carrying mud or flying in and out.
- The body has a very thin, thread-like waist, and may be black and yellow or metallic blue.
- The cells hold paralyzed spiders if a fallen nest is broken open.
How this works
The quiz counts which cues match a paper wasp or a mud dauber. Nest material and shape are the most reliable, while waist and colony size support the answer. Answer only what you can see from a safe distance, and use I can't tell for the rest, since a skipped cue is better than a guess.
It covers the common paper wasps and the black-and-yellow, organ-pipe, and blue mud daubers. Yellowjackets, hornets, and other wasps are different and are not scored. A tie means your answers were split, and a look at the nest material from a distance usually settles it without disturbing the wasps.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- Purdue Extension Entomology: Mud Daubers, Thread-like waist, mud nests, spider prey, and low sting risk. (checked October 2026)
- Purdue Extension Entomology: Social Bees and Wasps, Paper wasp umbrella-like exposed comb, temperament, and nest sites. (checked October 2026)
- Colorado State University Extension: Living with Mud Daubers, Mud dauber description, spider prey, and weaker venom than yellowjackets. (checked October 2026)

Frequently asked questions
Do mud daubers sting?
Rarely. They are not aggressive about defending nests, though they may sting if handled or provoked. Their venom is much weaker than a yellowjacket's.
Are paper wasps aggressive?
They are considered relatively nonaggressive. They live in colonies and can sting when the nest is disturbed, so avoid knocking nests or working close to them.
What do mud daubers put in their nests?
Paralyzed but live spiders, one egg per cell. Prey includes orb-weavers, crab spiders, and wolf spiders, so they act as natural spider control.
Where do European paper wasps nest?
Often in enclosed spaces such as lighting fixtures and motor homes, which leads to unexpected encounters with people.
