Tortoise vs Terrapin

Verdict: Check the feet and the water. A tortoise lives on land with stumpy, elephant-like unwebbed feet, while a terrapin lives in brackish tidal water and has webbed hind feet.

Tell-apart quiz

In the US, terrapin usually means the diamondback terrapin, a turtle of salt marshes and tidal creeks from Cape Cod to the Florida Keys and around the Gulf. A tortoise is a land turtle, such as the desert tortoise of the Southwest or the gopher tortoise of Florida. Usage differs abroad, so this page follows US meaning.

Both are shelled reptiles, so the shell alone can mislead. Habitat and feet separate them quickly. Tortoises dig burrows and eat plants, while terrapins swim and crush snails, clams, and crabs. The sections below show which clues are the most reliable. The feet and the setting give the fastest answer.

When you are looking at which

Tortoise

  • You found it on dry ground far from water, plodding along slowly.
  • Its back feet are thick, round, and unwebbed, like tiny elephant legs.
  • It has a high-domed shell and is eating grass or cactus.
  • There is a deep burrow nearby, which tortoises dig for shelter.

Terrapin

  • You saw it in salty or brackish water near a marsh, creek, or tidal flat.
  • The hind feet have webbing between the toes.
  • The shell has concentric diamond rings and the skin is gray with dark spots.
  • It was eating snails, clams, or crabs, or nesting on a coastal beach.

How this works

The quiz counts cues for a land tortoise versus a diamondback terrapin. Habitat and feet are the strongest, shell shape and diet are supporting clues. Answer only the cues you observed, and use I can't tell for the rest, so a missed detail does not skew the result.

It uses the desert and gopher tortoise as land examples and the diamondback as the terrapin. Box turtles, sliders, and sea turtles are different animals and are not scored here. A tie means your answers were split, and a look at the feet or the habitat usually settles it before you try anything else.

Frequently asked questions

Is a terrapin a turtle or a tortoise?

A terrapin is a turtle. In the US it usually means the diamondback terrapin, a brackish-water species. A tortoise is a land-dwelling turtle with unwebbed feet.

What does a diamondback terrapin eat?

Mostly snails, clams, and other mollusks, plus crustaceans, fish, worms, and insects. Their jaws crush shells, but they eat only soft-shelled prey.

How long do tortoises live compared with terrapins?

Desert tortoises that reach about 20 years often live 50 to 80 years, and some tortoises live over a century. Diamondback terrapins can survive up to about 25 years in the wild.

Where do diamondback terrapins live?

On the US east coast from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, to the Florida Keys, and along the Gulf Coast. They live in brackish tidal rivers, marshes, and lagoons.
