Linen vs Cotton
Verdict: Choose linen for hot weather and long wear, and cotton for a softer feel, lower cost and easier everyday care. Linen is the stronger fiber but creases sharply; cotton also wrinkles, just less dramatically.
Linen comes from the flax plant and cotton from the cotton boll. Both are plant cellulose, so both absorb moisture well and both wrinkle. The practical gap is in strength, feel and price. Textile data puts flax at roughly 5.5 to 6.5 grams-force per denier dry, against 3 to 5 for cotton.
Fabric performance depends on more than fiber. A textile expert at the University of Delaware points out that yarn thickness, twist and weave density can matter as much as the fiber, so a tight cotton twill can outlast a loose linen. Compare the specific fabric, not only the name on the label.
Linen vs Cotton side by side
| Trait | Linen | Cotton |
|---|---|---|
| Fiber source | Flax plant stem | Cotton plant boll |
| Dry fiber strength | About 5.5 to 6.5 gf/den | About 3 to 5 gf/den |
| Wet strength | Stays strong, about 6.0 to 7.8 gf/den | Gains strength when wet, about 3.3 to 6.0 gf/den |
| Wrinkling | Creases easily and sharply (poor elasticity) | Wrinkles too (low resiliency), usually less sharply |
| Moisture regain | About 8.75% | About 7 to 8.5% |
| Drying | Dries faster than cotton | Slower to dry |
| Feel | Cool, crisp, softens with washing | Soft and fluffy from the start |
| Cost | Higher, flax needs more care to grow and process | Generally lower |
| Typical uses | Summer shirts, tablecloths, towels, bedding | T-shirts, sheets, denim, everyday basics |

Which one fits you
Linen
- You live somewhere hot and humid and want a fabric that feels cool and dries fast.
- You want a fiber that gets softer with washing and lasts for many years.
- You like a relaxed, rumpled look and do not iron.
- You are buying towels or kitchen cloths that need to dry quickly between uses.
Cotton
- You want a soft feel from the first wear without a break-in period.
- You are watching the budget and need a lot of yardage or several sets.
- You want easy care and a fabric that suits sensitive skin, such as sheets.
- You prefer a smoother, less creased look without ironing every wear.
How this works
The quiz asks about climate, wrinkle tolerance, budget, feel and wear. Each answer points to the fabric whose properties fit best, using fiber data from textile sources, and the one-line note under each question explains the trade-off behind that cue, so you can see why it points where it does.
It cannot see the actual fabric. Weave, thread count, finishing and blends change how both fibers behave, so treat the result as a starting point and check the label, the weave and the hand feel in person before you buy.
Where these numbers come from
The figures and defaults on this page are based on:
- Cotton Incorporated: Textile Fibers booklet, Strength, moisture regain and wrinkling data for cotton and flax. (checked October 2026)
- Wikipedia: Linen, Linen drying, cool feel, wrinkling and production cost compared with cotton. (checked October 2026)
- University of Delaware: Cotton v linen, Fabric strength depends on yarn and weave, not only fiber. (checked October 2026)

Frequently asked questions
Is linen stronger than cotton?
As a fiber, yes. Flax measures about 5.5 to 6.5 gf/den dry against 3 to 5 for cotton. A finished fabric depends on yarn size and weave, so a dense cotton can outlast a loose linen.
Does linen wrinkle more than cotton?
Linen is the fabric best known for creasing because its fiber has poor elasticity. Cotton has low resiliency too and wrinkles, so the difference is mostly how sharp and permanent the creases look.
Is linen cooler than cotton?
Linen feels cool to the touch, absorbs moisture and dries faster than cotton, which is why it is popular for hot weather. Lightweight cotton voile or lawn can be cool too.
Why does linen cost more?
Flax needs a lot of attention to grow and is harder to process into fabric than cotton. That makes linen considerably more expensive to produce.
