PVC vs CPVC
Verdict: Use CPVC for hot and cold supply water, because it handles much higher temperatures. Use PVC for cold water and drain-waste-vent, where it is standard. PVC tops out around 140 F, CPVC around 200 F.
PVC is polyvinyl chloride, and CPVC is the same plastic with extra chlorine added. That change raises the temperature it can take. Standard PVC begins to distort at about 140 F (60 C), while CPVC is rated to about 200 F (93 C), which is why CPVC is used for hot water lines.
Both are joined with solvent cement, but not the same cement. CPVC cements meet ASTM F493 and PVC cements meet ASTM D2564, so check the can before gluing. Local plumbing code decides what is allowed for supply water or drains in your area, so confirm with your building department.
PVC vs CPVC side by side
| Trait | PVC | CPVC |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Polyvinyl chloride | Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride |
| Maximum operating temperature | About 140 F (60 C) | About 200 F (93 C) |
| Hot water supply | Not suitable | Designed for hot and cold water |
| Drain, waste, vent | Standard choice, widely used for sewer and drain pipe | Not the usual choice |
| Solvent cement standard | ASTM D2564 | ASTM F493 |
| Flexibility | Stiffer, more brittle | More flexible and ductile |
| Tensile strength | About 7,500 psi | About 8,200 psi |
| Heat retention | Not a hot-water pipe | Holds hot water temperature better than metal pipe |
| Thermal expansion | About 3.6 in per 100 ft per 100 F change | Also expands, plan for expansion on hot lines |

Which one fits you
PVC
- You are running cold-water or drain, waste and vent lines where heat is not a factor.
- You want the common, familiar pipe for sewer and drain work.
- The line stays well under 140 F, such as irrigation or cold supply.
- You are following a plumber's or code's call for standard PVC on a drain.
CPVC
- You are running hot water supply lines and need a pipe rated for water up to about 180 F.
- You want a more flexible pipe that retains heat better than metal.
- The line may see warm water, such as from a water heater.
- Local code allows plastic hot water lines and you will use the matching CPVC cement.
How this works
The quiz asks about water temperature, use, cement, routing and heat loss. Each answer favors the pipe most associated with that cue, and the note under each question names both so you can see the reasoning, including which cues are weaker or overlap.
This is a general comparison. Pressure ratings change with pipe size, wall thickness and water temperature, and plumbing codes differ by location, so confirm product ratings with the manufacturer and your local building department before you buy or install anything for hot water.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use PVC for hot water?
No. Standard PVC has a maximum working temperature of about 140 F (60 C) and starts to deform above that. Use CPVC or another pipe rated for hot water.
What is the temperature limit of CPVC?
About 200 F (93 C) as a material limit. Residential CPVC supply systems such as Charlotte Pipe FlowGuard Gold are rated for water service up to 180 F under ASTM D2846.
Can I use PVC cement on CPVC?
No. CPVC needs solvent cement made for it, meeting ASTM F493, and PVC uses cement meeting ASTM D2564. Use the primer and cement recommended by the pipe maker.
Is CPVC stronger than PVC?
Slightly. CPVC has a higher tensile strength, about 8,200 psi versus 7,500 psi, and is more flexible and crush-resistant. Pressure ratings depend on pipe size, schedule and water temperature.
