Pellet Grill vs Gas Grill
Verdict: Choose a pellet grill for smoky flavor and low-and-slow cooking, if you have power and a bigger budget. Choose gas for fast starts, high-heat searing and simple, power-free grilling.
A pellet grill uses an electric auger to feed compressed wood pellets into a firebox, with a fan and controller holding the temperature. It needs electricity, runs roughly 180 to 450 or 600 degrees F depending on the model, and gives real wood smoke. Lowe's says plan on about 2 pounds of pellets an hour for low smoking and about 4 for high heat.
A gas grill lights quickly, with burners preheating in about 10 to 15 minutes, and runs without a power outlet. It excels at high-heat searing but gives only a lightly charred flavor. Taste of Home found three-burner gas grills around $419 to $849 and pellet grills $899 and up, though entry-level pellet models start lower.

Do pellet grills need electricity?
Yes. An electric motor drives the auger, and the controller and fan also need power, according to Lowe's. Gas grills do not need an outlet.
Is a pellet grill more expensive than a gas grill?
Usually. Taste of Home puts three-burner gas grills around $419 to $849 and pellet grills at $899 and up, while Lowe's says entry-level pellet grills can start at a few hundred dollars. Cost depends on size and brand.
How many pellets does a pellet grill use?
Lowe's says plan on about 2 pounds an hour for low-temperature smoking and about 4 pounds an hour for high-heat grilling. Hoppers hold about 10 to 30 pounds.
