Sod vs Seed

Verdict: Choose sod for an instant lawn, slopes and a weed-free start, if you can pay more. Choose seed to save money and get stronger roots, if you can wait about a season and plant at the right time.

Which one fits you

Sod gives a usable lawn almost immediately and starts relatively weed free. University of Minnesota Extension notes it works well on slopes and erosion-prone areas, and can be laid nearly any time during the growing season. Seed costs far less, but needs light watering several times a day at first and nearly a full season to mature.

Timing matters more for seed. For cool-season grasses, the best window is late summer, about mid-August to mid-September in Minnesota or Aug. 25 to Oct. 10 in Missouri, and spring seeding invites crabgrass. Sod can be laid in most seasons except mid-winter freezes, and in summer heat it must be laid within 12 to 24 hours of cutting.

Which one fits you

Sod

  • You want a usable lawn in days or weeks for a party, pets or a home sale
  • You have a slope or erosion-prone area where seed and soil could wash away
  • You want a relatively weed-free start for the new lawn
  • You cannot plant in the late-summer seeding window

Seed

  • You want the lowest cost and can wait a season
  • You can seed in late summer and water carefully
  • You want stronger roots over the long term after the grass matures
  • You have a large area where sod would be expensive

How this works

The quiz compares your timing, budget, slope and weed concerns to the strengths of each method described by university extension services. Grass type matters a lot, and these sources focus on cool-season lawns in the Midwest. Quiz answers are weighed equally, and "Not sure" answers are skipped.

Warm-season grasses have different seeding times, so check your state's extension guidance before planting. Warm-season grasses such as bermudagrass have different seeding times, so check your state's extension guidance before planting. Soil preparation matters for both methods and for the final result.

Frequently asked questions

Is sod better than seed?

Sod is better for speed, slopes and a weed-free start. Seed costs less and builds strong roots, but needs the right planting window, repeated light watering and nearly a full season. The right choice depends on your budget, timing and site.

When is the best time to plant grass seed?

For cool-season grasses, late summer into early fall: about mid-August to mid-September in Minnesota and Aug. 25 to Oct. 10 in Missouri. Spring seeding is discouraged in Missouri because of crabgrass and summer stress.

How often should I water new sod and new seed?

University of Missouri Extension says new seed gets light watering one to four times a day at first, and new sod one or two times a day, with about 1 inch applied at the first watering. Cut back as roots develop.

Is sod worth the extra cost?

Often, if you need a quick, erosion-resistant lawn. University of Missouri Extension notes that if reseeding becomes necessary, total cost can end up favoring sod.
